Geodesic Domes & Dome Homes

Geodesic domes hold a special place in my heart. We are actually building one now to be our main residence. Very exciting. Whilst they are quite common place in the USA, in Australia they certainly are not. Australian building concepts are really quite conservative, although this is slowly beginning to change. With a renewed emphasis on ecology and the environment, now more than ever, they are really coming into their own.

As we are moving further and further toward the construction phase of our own one, I will be adding more content on this subject. For now though, we shall start with the basics.

What is a geodesic dome?

Structural Integrity & Flexibility.

Geodesic Domes use triangular networks forming hexagons and pentagons, this method provides for a free-span and self-supporting structure requiring no internal supports, such as a roof load-bearing partion wall. What this means is maximum flexibility of roof floor design, utilizing or interior space, and also for future expansion. They are stronger and safer homes , and have proven to withstand tornados, hurricanes, cyclones and earthquakes far better than conventional box shaped homes. All the space you pay for is usable, providing you with complete flexibility for placement of interior partitions, fixtures, and furniture...100% space effcient.

Energy Efficiency

They are highly energy efficient in two ways. Firstly, when compared to a common rectilinear home of equal floor space, a dome home has` around 30-50% less roof and wall area exposed to the elements. This reduction in surface area equates to a reduction in energy costs for heating and cooling. Secondly, the spherical shape facilitates a natural air flow yielding more even temperatures. It also aids in reducing air stratification, minimizing cold spots, and maximizing the overall interior comfort.

Building Affordability

The fact that they provide the greatest amount of floor area and volume with the least amount of surface area, drastically reduces the quanity of building materials required. Not only this, but there are savings in construction cost, and therefore a reduction in interim financing and interest expenses. Also as much as 30-50% savings in on-going energy costs. Dome Homes continue to provide great cost cutting opportunities for the do-it-yourselfer.

I'm convinced. Where can i get one!? In Australia, I can recommend the best company for this kind of building to be Kwickset Konstruction Kits.
