Interior Design - Talking Colour

Understanding what someone means when they talk about colour can be quite confusing. Below are the terms explained for you.

Hue

Hue identifies the general family of a colour, such as red, yellow, blue or green. Lighter or darker variations are still the same hue. Thus, a light red and a deep red are of the same hue. The traditional colour wheel is made up of twelve colour families: red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, red-violet, violet and blue-violet.

Value
This refers to the lightness or darkness of a colour. Light blues, medium blues, and dark blues have the same hue, but different values. Value describes how light or dark a specific colour may be. On many colour strips, lighter values are at the top, mid-tone values are in the middle and darker values are at the bottom. When you combine colours from a single colour strip, you're creating a monochromatic colour scheme - perfect for creating a sophisticated, Spacious look in a single room

Shades
Those colours with values closest to black, the darker blues, the darker reds, and so forth.

Tints
Those colours with values closest to white, the lighter blues, the lighter reds, and so forth.

Tone
This refers to a colour's intensity, brightness or dullness. When grey is added to a colour ;ke red, it dulls the intensity and renders it a darker tone.
