Regular sharpening of your lawn mower blades will give you a consistently better cut. Why? Because dull mower blades tend to the rip grass blades instead of actually cutting them nice and cleanly, and this leaves the grass susceptible to diseases.
How to sharpen lawn mower blades:
- to ensure the lawn mower doesn't start up accidentally, first remove the spark plug wire.
- remove the nut that holds the blade up against the deck using a wrench, and then remove it.
- Use a scraper to clean any built-up debris from the underside of the lawn mower.
- to do the actual sharpening, you should use a file - check the blade edges for small nicks
- follow the existing angle of the cutting edge and sharpen with nice smooth even strokes of the file - the existing bevel will be about 45 degrees
- make sure you use the same amount of filingstrookes on each blade so as to keep the blades (and the cut) even. This is necessary to avoid both engine damage and an uneven cut.
- If they are badly damaged - sometimes it's better to just buy new lawn mower blades!
