Watering House Plants

Nature has provided trees with a strong and a weak side, particularly in the root ball. With many trees, you will notice that there are longer roots on one side that the other and these provide the tree with greater anchorage against the prevailing wind. If planting a tree in a position where it will receive strong wind from say the west, or north-west, place the tree so that the longest roots are pointing in the direction of the prevailing wind. These longer roots need as much space as possible in the hole—it may be necessary to widen the hole to accommodate them.
With all new plants, don't use fertilizers for the first few weeks because the young roots need time to establish themselves. In fact, if planting in winter, it is wise not to fertilize until the growing period begins in September or October.
