I have recently got interested in gardening, which is a little odd because im only 12. I live in Melbourne and im not sure what to grows well here. Im already growing a lot of plants to experiment what grows well here, including cucumber, corn, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, peas, tomatoes and carrots.

Any ideas? I would like to grow some fruit trees but most need tropical weather. Are Vegaterians allowed to eat animal crackers?

    Hi Ash,

In terms of fruit trees I grow an Apricot and Peach very well. They just need pruning in Autumn, and netting to keep the birds away when the fruit is nearly ready. I imagine you could buy them in spring. I think citrus would grow OK also.

We are also lucky enough to be able to grow raspberries. Raspberries need a certain number of hours of very cold weather, so suit Melbourne well. Raspberries grow on canes.

have a look at a topic I started recently - called Melbournites...

I got some great advice there. :face-smile:

    Have fun!

    Hi Ash.
I'm not in Melbourne so I can't really offer you advice, but I just wanted to congratulate you on becoming interested in gardening, and trying some already.
Just imagine what you will have learned by the time you're in your own home and possibly feeding a family.
Good on ya, and welcome to our world.:face-wink:Coming at ya from Sunny Kalbarri, WA.

    Hello Ash welcome,

You are growing a good batch of vegetables for the Melbourne area. Have a look at VEGGI101 note on Melbournites- there is information there about what grows when. There are many fruit trees that grow here. Plums, stone fruits ,apples, pears, oranges ,grape fruit, lemons, almonds, passion fruit vines all should work down in the suburbs. You can also try strawberries and grapes. Next time you see a garden that might belong to an Australian- Italian family have a good look at all the vegetables they grow.
