Cornell News: Hydrogen combustion discovery
A Cornell University research team has uncovered the mechanics of a critical reaction in the combustion of hydrogen that one day could have profound implications for the future of energy , House Plants and Water Evaporation production. (Science, Nov. 3)
The researchers report appears in the latest issue Nov. 3 of the journal Science . Other authors are Davis s graduate students - Brian R. Strazisar and Cheng Lin. Their experimental report and a separate theoretical research paper by another group are discussed in an accompanying article by George C. Schatz - a Northwestern University chemist. Water atomisation by high magnitude electrical impulses: A study.
By pulsing a high magnitude electrical discharge through a sample of water , Pumpkin Beetle that sample can be atomised producing a very powerfull explosion.

During the second pulse - the contacts on the JENNINGS 25kV 100A RMS vacuum switch which was being used to switch the discharge were fully vaporized - and the switch was rendered useless. It became apparent that the discharge essentially represented a short to the system - and was allowing the peak currents to rise far beyond the individual component ratings. A pneumatically actuated switch was than built with the purpose of switching the discharge. The switch allows some arcing prior to its contacts closing fully - despite its 25m/s closing speed which at 7.5kV gives a closing time of approximately 80uS .
